  1. 1758-1840. German astronomer. A medical
  2. doctor, Olbers was a keen amateur astronomer
  3. and a founder member of the Celestial Police,
  4. a group of astronomers who attempted to
  5. locate a supposed `missing planet' between
  6. Mars and Jupiter. During his search he
  7. discovered two asteroids, Pallas 1802 and
  8. Vesta 1807. Credited to him are a number of
  9. comet discoveries, a new method of
  10. calculating cometary orbits, and the stating
  11. of Olbers' paradox.
